FADE IN:

INT. LIVING ROOM – NIGHT

DURING INSTRUMENTAL BEGINNING

Starting from a few packed bags sitting by the front door we slowly track across the living room (a couple of feet above floor level) passing a shattered lamp, a coffee table on its side and other items serving as witnesses to conflict.

DISSOLVE TO:

From POV of inside the bedroom a mother in her mid-30s whose face bears the marks of abuse slowly cracks open the door and looks in.

LYRICS

And she takes another step

slowly she opens the door

Her husband is passed out face down on the bed, his right hand hanging off the mattress and a few inches above an empty bottle lying on its side.

LYRICS

Check that he is sleeping

She quietly shuts the door.

LYRICS

Pick up all the broken glass

EXT. HOUSE – CONTINUOUS

Bags slung over her shoulders she takes her three kids to the station wagon parked out front. Baby in hand, seven-year-old daughter on one side, four-year-old boy holding onto mama’s other hand.

LYRICS

And furniture on the floor

Been up half the night screaming

She straps baby in car seat. The four-year-old is seatbelted beside him while the seven-year-old sits in front.

LYRICS

Now it’s time to get away

pack up the kids in the car

Seated in the driver’s seat she takes a moment to gather strength.

LYRICS

Another bruise to try to hide

another alibi to write

The station wagon pulls away from the curb and drives off.

LYRICS

Another ditch in the road

you keep moving

Darren FADES IN into the spot where the car was, looking in the direction where it drove away.

LYRICS

(singing)

Another stop sign

you keep moving on

And the years go by so fast

wonder how I ever made it through

He FADES AWAY on “through”.

EXT. HIGHWAY – NIGHT

DURING BRIEF INSTRUMENTAL SECTION driving POV shot as we pass over the centerlines of a highway.

INT. CAR – CONTINUOUS

Panning over from right to left, from sleeping four-year-old to sleeping baby.

LYRICS

And there are children to think of

baby’s asleep in the backseat

Shot of mother driving. Seven-year-old saddened as she looks over at the sorrow which plagues her mother.

LYRICS

Wonder how they’ll ever make it

through this living nightmare

The little girl closes her eyes.

LYRICS

But the mind is an amazing thing

full of candy dreams and new toys

DURING DISSOLVE

LYRICS

and another cheap hotel

INT. HOTEL ROOM – NIGHT

Side Shot of mother and children sleeping in two beds. The two older ones in one bed, mother and baby in the other.

LYRICS

Two beds and a coffee machine

Darren FADES IN seated on the bed near mother.

LYRICS

(singing)

But there are groceries to buy

He gently places his hand on her head.

LYRICS

(singing)

And she knows

she’ll have to go home

Darren sings down to her.

LYRICS

(singing)

Another ditch in the road

you keep moving

Another stop sign

you keep moving on

He fades away.

LYRICS

(singing)

And the years go by so fast

Back to the Wide Shot of mother and children sleeping in the two beds. (Pulling back to the MUSIC)

LYRICS

Wonder how I ever made it through

INT. HOTEL ROOM – MORNING

(DURING MAIN INSTRUMENTAL SECTION)

Mother uses makeup to try to conceal her black and eye and cheekbone.

The two older kids finish eating their mini donuts. The four-year-old walks over to mommy and asks for more just as she’s about to eat her share. She gives him the one in her hand and gives the last one to her daughter.

EXT. HIGHWAY – NIGHT

Again passing over the centerlines of the highway.

LYRICS

Another bruise to try to hide

Another alibi to write

The station wagon passes. (Shot from side of road)

LYRICS

Another lonely highway

in the black of night

Darren FADES IN in the middle of the highway, looking in the direction of the station wagon.

LYRICS

(singing)

There’s hope in the darkness

you know you’re gonna make it

EXT. STREET – LATER

Changing from dawn to morning light as we slowly come to a stop above the centerlines of the street.

LYRICS

Another ditch in the road

you keep moving

Pulling back from a stop sign.

LYRICS

Another stop sign

Continuing to pull back we realize we’re pulling back through a window and into a home.

LYRICS

You keep moving on

Still pulling back, the living room is revealed in right frame, a Christmas tree in left frame, mother, now in her 50s, opens a gift. She’s surrounded by her grown children, who now have young ones of their own.

LYRICS

And the years go by so fast

Continuing the nonstop pull back the Shot becomes Wider as we back into the dining room on this family that has endured so much finally enjoying peaceful times.

LYRICS

Silent fortress built to last

Wonder how I ever made it

As we come to rest on the pull back we find Darren, his back against the dividing wall of the dining room and living room. (Family in background)

LYRICS

(singing)

Ooo…Mmm…
